Organized remembrance services are no longer held, but every September 8th at 6:45 pm there will be an informal gathering at Sewickley Cemetery for those who wish to share the evening of the crash with other family and friends of the passengers and crew of Flight 427.
The league sponsored the first anniversary remembrance service on September 8th, 1995. Since then, they have been held yearly. Below are some highlights.
The fifth anniversary remembrance service occurred on September 8th, 1999. There were over 100 members and their families in attendance.
On September 5, 2004, the League held a 10th anniversary remembrance service at Sewickly Cemetery. The September 8, 2004 service, originally planned for the crash site, had to be moved inside to the Holiday Inn Pittsburgh Airport due to heavy rain. The League would like to thank the Reverend William Hower for his thoughts and prayers, Stephanie Frashetti for singing “The Love Remains,” a song written for the families in 1995 by Stephanie, and Richard Manning for playing “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes. Former Chairman of the NTSB Jim Hall spoke at the September 8th service and praised the Flight 427 ADSL for changing the way vicitims and families of air disasters are treated around the world. He told us that, because of our efforts and persistance, the NTSB and American Red Cross now give the families information and direction, not the involved airline.
Over 300 family and friends of USAir Flight 427 passengers and crew attended these remembrance services.
For the 15th Anniversary there were two services held over the Labor Day weekend. On Sunday, September 6th, 2009, we held a service at the Airport Holiday Inn on University Drive, Coraopolis, PA. There was a board meeting, a general membership meeting, and a dinner followed by a memorial service. Also, there were shuttle buses available from 2 pm until 4 pm to take those members who wish to visit the Crash Site there and back.
The 20th and final organized remembrance service was held on Monday, September 8th, 2014 at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh Airport location.
